If you want to
keep a British car legally in Spain for more than six months it will
need to be registered, plated and insured as a Spanish vehicle.
The
process is long, complex and possibly expensive.

Summary
of Procedure for Car
Registration in Almeria, Spain
(for British registered cars and British non-residents)
1.
Obtain Ficha Reducida from (eg) main dealer; needs UK Registration
Document (Allow 2 weeks). Check it is correct!
2.
Replace headlights for right-hand driving.
3. Obtain certificate of Empadronomiento (requires copy of title
deeds or equivalent and NIE)
4.
ITV test – requires above plus
UK
registration document. (1) Book appointment and present documents;
(2) Allow 2 days after test to obtain papers.
5.
Pay annual car tax (impuesto de circulacion) to Ayuntamiento
(requires NIE and ITV document).
6.
Obtain internet security code from Hacienda (requires NIE and
certificate of Empadronomiento): needs 24 hours before next step
6a.
Download Certificado de Usario from http://www.cert.fnmt.es
7.
Obtain form for Impuesto de Matriculacion (modelo 576) from http://www.aeat.es:
requires security code (above), technical details from ITV
certificate, emissions level for model; calculation of notional
value and tax rate (information on site)
8.
Pay tax either on-line or in cash at bank (the latter generates a
receipt code for entry in modelo 576).
9.
Print off modelo 576
10.
Obtain application form (and instructions) from Trafico
11.
Pay registration fee at Trafico
12.
Present all paperwork (and passport) with photocopies (may require
two days to process)
13.
Obtain insurance (needs usual personal I/D, driving license and
certificate of no-claims entitlement, if to be claimed)
14.
Be sure to inform DVLC of intention to export (tear off slip inside
your registration document).
Essential
papers, advisable to be carried to all destinations with copies:
Certificate of Empadronomiento, Passport, NIE, ITV, Receipts for tax payments
IF
ALL GOES REASONABLY SMOOTHLY, YOU SHOULD ALLOW AT LEAST FOUR WEEKS
TO COMPLETE THE PROCESS!
