LOCATION
Cabo de Gata (Minas de Rodalquilar)

SCENE
Juan discovers the reason for the explosions. He meets Sean (an ex-revolutionary Irishman and explosives expert) on the trail.  Juan sees Sean as his passport to busting the bank at Mesa Verde 

SCENE
Juan tries to persuade Sean over breakfast but he is not interested.  Sean attempts to leave on his motorcycle but Juan riddles it with bullets.  Sean blows up Juan's carriage.

INTERMISSION

On the right is a remnant from the carriage after the explosion. Found in November 2009, it is one of the two candle holders from the altar at which Sean appeared to pray before blowing  everything to bits. The colour is the result of around four decades of sunlight damage to the glass and a coating of mud and dust.

SCENE
The determined Juan ensures Sean becomes a wanted man by helping him blow up a church sheltering government troops.

SCENE
The two set off for Mesa Verde. On the way, Sean jumps aboard a passing train and goes off on his own.

SCENE
Juan eventually arrives at Mesa Verde, also by train, and admires the big city scene.

It is not long before he witnesses the atrocities of the revolutionary war - dissidents put up against a wall and shot by an army firing squad.
