There is much galloping in the gulches.

Joe makes it back but is caught sneaking in by Ramon.  He is badly beaten  and locked up but contrives an escape.  He spends some time recovering from his wounds and plotting his showdown with Ramon.  "When a man with a 45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with the pistol will be a dead man.  Let's see if that's true."  Joe has the 45 and disproves Ramon's old maxim.
