LAWRENCE OF ARABIA LOCATIONS

In 1917 Lawrence was sent to Saudi Arabia as a liaison officer to encourage Prince Feisal and disparate tribal groups to rebel against the Turks. He built a formidable reputation from his harassment of the Turkish railway supply lines and, most significantly, from his capture of Akaba.

SCENE
Lawrence made several attacks on the Hedjaz Railway and was successful in preventing a Turkish withdrawal from Medina.

In order to supply Prince Feisal's military activities towards Damascus, it was necessary to take the port of Akaba which had heavy seaward defences and controlled the narrow pass inland. Lawrence devised a bold strategy to take Akaba from the land, requiring a circuitous trek through the Nefud Desert.

SCENE
Before crossing the Nefud, Lawrence paused at an oasis. Two outcaste boys, who had been secretly following their hero, peered over the ridge. They were caught but were appointed as Lawrence's servants.

Before the attack on Akaba Lawrence had to mete out some summary justice in order to settle an inter-tribal dispute.

SCENE
The desert crossing succeeded and Lawrence attacked Akaba from the landward side, reaching the sea with little resistance and securing the port.

SCENE
Lawrence hitched a ride back to Cairo. He entered the city in the back of a truck to an initially underwhelming reception.
