General George Patton became commander of the Western Task Force engaged in Operation Torch in North Africa.  In July 1943 he commanded the 7th Army during the invasion of Sicily.

The U.S. forces  suffered a terrible defeat at the Kasserine Pass, Tunisia, in 1942.

Patton was brought in to knock the forces into shape and restore morale. The US forces' HQ was in a small north African village.

(The HQ building was a wooden construction on the site to the rear of the grey car - the adjoining, single storey buildings can be seen in the film)

(Captain Douglas's eagle eye spotted this scene in the town. Only the outline of part of the church can be seen in the film. The town, which had in any case been substantially 'dressed', is now almost completely rebuilt)

SCENE
Rommel flew in to an airstrip near a PoW camp to collect intelligence reports. His officers were crowing over the victory at Kasserine. Rommel was less convinced about the significance of the battle.

Within two weeks, Rommel's tanks attacked at El Guettar.  Patton directed the battle from a vantage point above the valley.
